WELCOME TO THE PARISH CHURCH OF THE HOLY ROOD

window

The Church Hall was originally built in 1964 on land that the Church had acquired on Vicarage Green, Edwalton and it has been used by the Church and the wider Community more or less on a continuous basis ever since. The prefabricated building was assumed to have a life of 25 years; it has outlived that time by a further 14 years due to the diligent care and attention of the successive caretakers and volunteers and a major refurbishment in 2003.
StoneCurchHall

The Church Hall is not located adjacent to the Church but is situated a short distance away, and is available for hire for various functions for up to around 200 people, with music up to 11.00 pm.

The facilities consist of a stage with lighting and curtains; a kitchen with hot and cold water, crockery and cutlery, toilets, a smaller meeting room/changing room, and tables and chairs, and the Church Hall is heated. Limited car parking on site is available.

Alcoholic drinks may be consumed on the premises but not sold in any way unless a licence is obtained at the users expense.

The regular weekly users of the Church Hall include the Boys’ Brigade, Brownies, a pre-school nursery, and various life style parties such as Weight Watchers. Jumble sales, fairs and sales, parties are regularly held throughout the year.

The Edwalton Drama Group put on 2 –3 plays per year including the ever-popular winter panto!

Further information on bookings can be obtained from the Church Hall Bookings Secretary by letter, telephone or

The Vicar David Bignell , at a Coffee Morning held on Saturday 11th October 2003 ‘officially’ opened the restored Church Hall with prayers of thanks. In attendance were representatives of the main contractors, T Kieran and Son; the architect Mr Reg Jefferies; David the plumber and Mr John Wrigley Edwalton Church Project Chairman

During this Coffee Morning members of the various ‘user’ groups held displays and presentations and raised extra funds from the sale of cakes, books, souvenirs and ploughman’s lunch, that have gone towards the restoration fund.

* New energy efficient heating system
* Sanded and resealed Main Hall floor

The staff of the Pre-School Group undertook the redecoration of the ‘Club Room’ that they use on a regular weekly basis.

Gardening Club

The previously uncultivated piece of rough ‘agricultural’ land between the church yard and the golf course began development following the Church Extension in 1996. All the work, (apart from the levelling which has done by the contractors) was carried out by the parishioners who formed a Gardening Club, who continue to develop and maintain the Garden which has now developed into a mature garden.

Many permanent features, including several seats, a stone statue, gazebo and numerous trees and shrubs have been given in memory of loved ones.

An illustrated guide describing the various plants will lead you through the Prayer Walk and also past the living willow Easter Tomb.

This is an ideal place for wedding photographs as well as a tranquil area for all to enjoy as it is freely open every day.

The garden is tended every Saturday morning, weather permitting, between 10.00am and noon, by a dedicated group of volunteers. Any addition to this group would be warmly welcomed – no experience needed.

In the photogallery you may find some pictures of the churchgarden..

The Church has a peal of 6 bells, and a team of bell ringers meet regularly to practice. The bells are normally rung at the Sunday Services, and at weddings (and others) by prior arrangement with the Vicar.

Drama Group:
Edwalton Church Drama Group

Edwalton Church Drama Group staged its first pantomime in 1965 and has continued the tradition ever since. This year is no exception.

The group meets every Monday evening
at 7.30pm in Edwalton Church Hall.
In addition to the pantomime they put on at least one, sometimes two, plays every year, ranging from real drama to light-hearted comedy; they also entertain at the annual harvest supper.

The group also has an active social calendar which includes
a BBQ, occasional visits to the theatre and barn dances.

The group consists mainly of adults but during the pantomime we recruit local youngsters who, we hope, will become our future adult performers.
If anyone is interested in joining the group,
either on stage or off,
then contact the secretary Pam Gardner
on 0115 914 5535,
or speak to any Drama Group member.

Edwalton Church Choir:...

There is a strong Choir (adult and junior) who meet for choir practice during the week, and usually sing at the evening services, Choral Communion, Easter and Christmas Services and other special occasions.
The choir is available for weddings by prior arrangement with the Vicar.

We are very proud to have a choral tradition within the Church which goes back at least 80 years. The Choir leads our Evensong at 6.30pm with Choral Communion every third Sunday, when the Youth section is encouraged to join the adults.
Church Festival Services are very often accompanied by the joint choirs, when special pieces and anthems are sung. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings, when great fun is had by all in making music together. The Youth Choir rehearses from 6.30pm and the adults from 7.45pm.
The adult section regrettably is getting older, with two members having sung in the choir for a total of some 110 years between them; that is not to say that we are all too long in the tooth!
The Choir would be delighted to welcome new members into our midst, especially ladies, as currently we are short of regular contralto voices.

Likewise we would welcome new children into the Youth section, where they are schooled very capably by Graham Smith in many varied styles of Church music.

Musicgroup:

Edwalton Church Music Group

A small music group was formed in February 2006, to help lead occasional services and in general have some fun times together making music.

In time it would be good to take it to some nursing homes and other places, when we get confident enough. At the present time we consist of
three young people and four adults, playing,
piano, recorder, base guitar, flute, violin and saxophone.

Anyone interested in joining us could turn up at one of our rehearsals, which take place every second Tuesday of the month – 6.00 to 7.00pm.

Crèche

A crèche is available during every Family Communion and Parade Service. This is based in the Transept and everyone in the crèche (young and old) is able to partake fully in the service.

Mums and Toddlers:

Mums’ and Toddlers’ welcomes mums and dads, grandparents and carers with their babies and toddlers.
We meet every Tuesday morning between 10.00am and 11.45 am
in the Church Meeting Room, during term time.

The Mums’’ and Toddlers’ team include a rota of helpers to offer refreshments throughout the morning. Also we have Andrew (the church caretaker) who kindly helps to put the toys and activities out and in at each session – most of the children love to help with this. Also several kind ladies, who help with the weekly session – it’s a real team effort.

We use two rooms, one with larger toys, including slide and ride on cars for older toddlers and a separate room for younger children. We encourage initiative and creative play with play doh, sticking and pasting and colouring with crayons and chalk. A corner is reserved for babies, with playmats and development toys.

The Community Nursery Nurse for West Bridgford Health Centre
visits on the first Tuesday of every month. If requested, she will weigh the babies and toddlers and discuss health matters.

We have occasional Virgin Vie events (all the latest make-up and jewellery) A percentage of the proceeds given to Mums’ and Toddlers’ funds.

Andrew also offers his professional photographic services to the group
about twice a year. The ensuing photographs are a delight.

Mums’ and Toddlers’ is THE place to chill out on a Tuesday morning, make new friends and watch your children grow and develop in a safe and stimulating environment.

Because every child is special, we try to make Mums’ and Toddlers’
a special experience for everyone.

We welcome children and their parents or/and grandparents to join us at 9.30am until 10.15am each Sunday morning
in the Meeting Room.
We have a prayer, Bible based story telling, children’s choruses and a variety of craft experiences, all led by experienced teachers.
At 10.15 we move through into the church
to join the family worship, where the parents can take communion
and the children join with them for a blessing.
There is no Junior Church on the third Sunday of the month
but there is a parade service for the children’s uniformed organisations.
We usually break for the school holidays,
when many families visit relatives or enjoy a holiday.
We welcome children as babies, toddlers, young and older children –
in other words the complete family.

The parents help the children with the craft activities and give them security and confidence from a very young age to try to meet their needs as they mature.
We average 20 plus children and about the same total of adults each week. The parents and adults help to encourage a happy relaxed
and disciplined atmosphere.
At Christmas for the past six years, we have performed a Nativity play
to include parents and children.
That means that six babies have so far begun their acting careers
at 6 to 9 months of age as baby Jesus.
We also have a Parish Party for the adults and children
early in the New Year.

The Junior Church currently caters for ages 0 to 13.
